What is the u3a?
The u3a is for people who want to keep active in mind and body, enjoy socialising, and are no longer in full time employment.
No longer working full time? u3a is a UK-wide organisation that provides the opportunity for those no longer in work to come together and learn for fun. Make the most of life and join around 400,000 members exploring new ideas, skills and interests with your local u3a.
Dumfries u3a
Our membership is drawn mainly from Dumfries and the surrounding area, although we do have members from further afield. At present our membership stands at over 280.
Here in Dumfries u3a, we have a wide range of interest groups ranging from Art to Creative Writing, Philosophy to Photography and from Walking to Wine Appreciation. Decide what interest groups you'd like to join and give them a try - once you've joined u3a you can participate in as many groups as you like! No qualifications are needed to join and no awards are given - you don't have to prove you have learned or done something. Interest Groups are set up and run by members for members. There are no teachers, we are all learning together for fun. See our Groups page for more details. The Groups are detailed alphabetically, by category, or by venue or by day of the week.
Monthly Meetings
Excluding a summer break we have a meeting on fourth Thursday of each month These are normally held at the North West Resource Centre, College Road, Lincluden, Dumfries DG2 0BX tel 01387 325090. Please note from June our Monthly Meetings will be held at the Baptist Church Centre. From September they will change to the first Thursday of the month.
The meetings generally feature a guest speaker with a very diverse range of topics. Talks are followed by refreshments with sufficient time to catch up with old friends or make new ones. Check out our events page for the latest meeting details. There is a half-hourly bus service to the North West Resource Centre, leaving Burns Statue at ten-past and twenty-to the hour, including a 13.40 which should arrive in time for the meeting. If you are interested in the u3a just come along to one of these meetings. You would be made welcome and you can talk to one of the Committee to gain a better idea of Dumfries u3a and see if it might be for you.
